Spinel, historically more expensive than Diamonds and mistaken for rubies until the science of gemmology was developed. The object of devotion and desire for collectors and the world’s finest jewellers.
Very popular among monarchs for its vibrant colour and durability it can be found in many crown jewels collections.
The two most famous Spinels have been incorrectly identified as rubies. One of them is the 170 carats bright-red Spinel named “The Black Prince’s Ruby” mounted in the United Kingdom’s Imperial State Crown.
The finding of the Mahenge crystals changed the perception and fortune of this amazing gemstone.
Mahenge is the land of the Maasai, a limestone plateau area in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania. Here in 2007 four huge pinkish-red spinel crystals weighing between 5 and 50 kg were mined. Although these spectacular specimens were heavily included, portions of them were superb, yielding exceptional clean faceted red stones. Since that unique discovery, crystals of the same colour have never appeared again.
The astonishing 31,35 carats Gemforest heart-shaped Spinel is one of those few elected stones. Red is the colour of love and passion, the heart shape is their ultimate symbol.
